EMPOWERING UNDER PRIVILEGED GIRLS THROUGH SKILLS TRAINING

We are pleased to share the accomplishments of our skills training program for under privileged girls made possible through your generous support. 

Our Mission 

To empower these young women with marketable skills and enhance their economic independence has seen significant progress. 

2024 Program overview 

Objective 

Equip 100 girls and young women with skills in tailoring, hair dressing, bakery and computer application.  

Duration 

One year, 6 months and 3 months for short courses. 

Location: Girls Have a Dream School 

Participants: 100 girls aged 13-25years mainly from disadvantaged background. 

Key Achivements  

A total of 62 girls were trained. 38 girls successfully completed their training program, 8 dropped out and 16 are continuing. 

Skills acquisition 

Participants mastered essential skills in their chosen trade demonstrated through practical assessment.

Impact high lights  

Since 2014, a total of 718 girls have successfully graduated, 70% of graduates contribute to their family income or support themselves financially. 

 

SUCCESS STORY 

Mastula had always dreamed of becoming a successful entrepreneur, growing up in a low income house hold she faced numerous challenges including limited access to education and job opportunities .However everything changed when she enrolled at Girls Have a Dream School skills training program. After completing her training Mastula secured a loan from the Dream bank enabling her launch her own bakery business. Today Mastula is a proud entrepreneur running a thriving bakery business. She has achieved financial independence supporting herself and her family, 

Community engagement  

Graduates participate in community initiatives sharing skills and inspiring peers. 

Challenges  

-The school couldn’t secure enough training rooms to accommodate the planned target numbers because of inadequate funding. 

-Retention; 8 participants dropped out due to personal reasons including misunderstandings with their spouses, relocated far among others. 

-Uganda Revenue Authority operational taxes including PAYE, Local service tax and NSSF contribution which are mandatory for employees. 

-Inadequate staff, initially an accountant was hired but dropped later because the school could not afford facilitating her in terms of salary. 

Future plans 

  1. Scale up; to secure enough space to expand the training to 100 girls in the new year2025. 
  1. Change school uniform from small is Great Women and Girls Empowerment to Girls Have a Dream. 
  1. Resource mobilization to secure funds to run the school effectively. 
  1. Address inadequate staffing by hiring an accountant and secretary. 
  1. Implement strategies to retain existing highly skilled staff such as competitive salaries and benefits. 
  1. To upgrade boarding facility to cater for students from far distant areas. 
  1. To have complete meals for students lunch. 
  1. Alumni Network; strengthen the alumni network for support and peer mentorship.  
  1. Partnership; strengthen collaboration with local businesses and organization for job placements and internship.
